Over 400 individuals from Russia, China, Belarus, Armenia, and Mongolia are participating in the VIII International Baikal Vereshchagin Conference.
In 2025, the scale of the conference honoring the distinguished Russian scientist Gleb Yurievich Vereshchagin, who was the organizer and leader of comprehensive studies on Lake Baikal, is indeed impressive: over 400 individuals from Russia, China, Belarus, Armenia, and Mongolia are participating in the event both in person and remotely. The main organizers of the conference are Limnological Institute SB RAS and Irkutsk Regional State Universal Scientific Library named after I.I. Molchanov-Sibirsky with the support of the following companies: Technopol, Sintol SPF, SibLabService, Russian Railways, Baikal Museum SB RAS, Aquarium of Baikal seal, RODNIK organizations, as well as Baikal International Film Festival “Man and Nature. “
The year 2025 marks a significant milestone for the commencement of research on Lake Baikal: it was 100 years ago that the Baikal Expedition of the USSR Academy of Sciences began its work. In addition to the session reports presented at the Conference, there were also plenary papers and practical sessions on molecular biology as part of the Baikal School of Young Scientists (BSYS-2025), on the base of common use centers of Limnological Institute SB RAS (with the participation of the company Sintol).) In addition to the presented program, a seminar “Innovations in Ichthyology: From Theory to Practice” was carried out. This seminar aimed at discussing contemporary approaches in experimental ichthyology, issues of restoring natural fish populations, preserving biodiversity, as well as issues of increasing the efficiency of aquaculture practices.
In 2025, the Vereshchagin Conference is one of the official sites of 24 Baikal International Film Festival “Man and Nature” https://baikalkinofest.ru/). Screenings of popular science films “Worlds on Lake Baikal. 15 years later” (directed by Vladimir Marin), “Seal and Man” (directed by Nikita Bulanov), “Off-season rings of the Baikal” (directed by Vladimir Marin) are accompanied by discussions with the participation of the main characters of the films. The program director of the festival, Elena Valerievna Utrobina, presented the films.
On September 13, within the Conference, there will also be a School Section for students in grades 6-11 who perform research work under the guidance of teachers.
